A vacuum breaker acts to prevent a vacuum from forming within an irrigation system by letting air in and out of the system as needed. It is suggested to install a vacuum breaker at the high point of your system to allow trapped air out during startup and to allow air in after the system has been turned off to prevent vacuum formation. In addition to preventing vacuum formation, this action also helps to lessen the effects of water hammer and prevent it from severely damaging system components.
